Hjalmar joined the military at 16 and fought in the Meligdal wars. At 20 he was decorated for heroic actions in the closing days of war. Was present for armistice talks that ended up forming the DMZ and Caldera Constabulatory. Was not there in a functional role, just as one of many "guests of honor" (political props) each side brought while diplomats did the actual work.
Suffered severe burns on his left hand after a munitions depot exploded and wears a glove to mask the disfigurement.

Decades later he leveraged his status as a war hero to mount a successful campaign for prime minister of Folliskog. Was noted by his his political peers for being a walking contradiction; He eschews typical formal wear for his old, nonformalwear military duster, is known to have an explosive temper, and is extremely proud of his military career. At the same time his agenda is focused primarily on infrastructure and public works and is considered the least hawkish and least interventionist
